DWMC Oct.14, 2017

Dear friends,
Join us on Saturday, October 14th at 10 am at Cravings, 76 Shenango Ave., Sharon, PA 16146. This is the vital meeting before Election Day. Come and learn how you can do your part to elect our candidates State- and County-wide and in each Municipality, School District, and Judicial District in Mercer County.
If can't make it, but would like to volunteer for the statewide judicial candidates, contact Kim Powell at 724-734-1399 or kimmyanne@gmail.comYou can also sign up by clicking here.
Kim is also organizing a Western PA Dems outing on Sunday, October 22nd to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. For details, contact Kim at the above phone/email.
Don't forget we are collecting household items, cleaning supplies, and personal care items for No One Left Behind, Pittsburgh at our meeting on Saturday. They are also looking for girls size 4T clothes.
See you Saturday at Cravings!

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Thanks to all who came out to support local candidates at our meeting on Saturday!
Don't miss our upcoming Statewide Judicial Tour in Mercer Countysponsored by the DWMC (see the attachment).
WHAT:       All Statewide Judicial Candidates will be touring Western Pa.
WHEN:       Saturday  September 16  ~  2:00 pm
WHERE:     Cravings Ice Cream, 76 Shenango Ave., Sharon, PA 16146
WHY:         Meet the candidates face-to-face and learn how the courts affect our communities. Be an informed voter!
The Supreme, Superior, and Commonwealth Courts can have a major impact on social justice issues ranging from education to women's health to workers' rights. When unions, people of color, and vulnerable communities are under attack, the courts can protect them. These elections matter. It is a rare opportunity to see all our judicial candidates tour Western Pennsylvania together. Join us for this historic event and meet these candidates in person. They need to hear from us in Mercer County!

This week, take action to protect Title IX protections for victims of sexual assault. Betsy DeVos' efforts to rescind these protections are alarming and disturbing.  Call Rep. Kelly, Sen. Toomey, and Sen. Casey and tell them to protect the Title IX protections enacted in 2011. The Dept. of Education is currently soliciting public comment. Take a moment to submit a comment in support of the 2011 regulations.

You can also speak out to defend DACA-recipients and DREAMERS. Use this guide to contact your representatives.

WIth gratitude for all you do,

Judy Hines

PS: The next DWMC meeting will be October 14th.

DWMC Aug.2017

Dear Friends,
This is a busy time with lots of upcoming events. The DWMC's next parade will be the Transfer Harvest Home parade on Tuesday, August 22nd. Line up will be at 5:30 at the Pymatuning Police Station behind the Transfer Sheetz. Parade will start at 6:15.
From Kim Powell: "We are really getting outnumbered by Republicans at the parades and fairs. We have a great group of dedicated Dems, so let's make these last few parades awesome! I think we were all impressed with our judicial candidates at our last meeting. So let's work hard for them and get their names out there!"
The next DWMC meeting will be September 9 , 2017 at 10:00 am at Cravings,76 Shenango Street, Sharon. If you are a local candidate and wish to be placed on the agenda to speak at the September meeting please contact Judy Hines. 724-866-2220

Dear Friends,

UPDATE: Saturday's at the Mercer County Courthouse has been POSTPONED. More details will be forthcoming.

The Youngstown event is still on.

Sunday, August 20 - Youngstown
3-4:30
UU Church
1105 Elm Street, Youngstown
From the host, Progress Mahoning Valley: "Join us in a vigil as part of a day of solidarity in the Mahoning Valley. Stand against white nationalism and the terrorism we saw in Charlottesville this past weekend carried out by groups like the neo Nazis and the KKK. We have seen the heightened rhetoric and scapegoating grow around the country. This calls for a strong united response in the Mahoning Valley. The vigil will bring us together in a community conversation about this issue. We will also discuss next steps for preparedness to keep our communities targeted by these groups safe and to promote racial justice and unity in the common causes we have together."

In solidarity,

Sheila Nowinski

Cancelled

Saturday Rally Cancelled

DWMC Action members:
The commissioners are giving us a hard time and are forbidding us a permit for Saturday. It is a public square and it is my understanding that the public is permitted to gather in public squares… in fact, that is their express purpose! However, Lisa, as a former police officer, has advised me that allow more time for the state police and local police to prepare may be a good idea. Therefore, the assembly is postponed. It pains me to say this, as already nearly a week has passed since the horrific events in Charlottesville and we have had no public gathering in Mercer County to commemorate the victims and discuss how we are going to move forward from here. The Friday (tomorrow) afternoon meeting at Cravings stands for 5 PM. We can at least gather and talk informally. We are going to push the commissioners to issue us a permit for Saturday the 26th, but please stay tuned until we can confirm a date.

May 2017 DWMC

Thank you to all who attended the Butler Climate March this weekend! It was wonderful to see such an outpouring of support for sensible environmental policies around the country and close to home.

We are only 100 Days into the Trump Administration. Our work defending Mercer County communities against the Republican Party's destructive agenda is far from over. This week take action to protect healthcare for all Americans. Call Rep. Kelly at (202) 225-5406 and tell him to oppose the proposed repeals of the ACA, and especially the MacArthur Amendment. Over 50% of Pennsylvanians have a pre-existing condition that would either disqualify them from coverage or force them to pay exorbitant premiums if the MacArthur Amendment becomes law.  For more ways to get involved, sign up for emails or text alerts from the PA Health Access Network at www.insurepa.org

On Friday, May 5th we'll be at Cravings, 4-6 pm, as usual, working to get out the vote for the May 16thprimary election. Find out more about endorsed, statewide judicial candidates: http://www.padems.com/candidates/

Mark your calendars for May events!

The DWMC is proud to host Justice Cynthia Baldwin, former PA Supreme Court Justice, andJudge Carolyn Nichols, candidate for Superior Court at our Saturday, May 13th meeting (10 am at Cravings). Click here for more info and to RSVP.

On Thursday, May 18th at 6 pm at Cravings, we've invited Hear Yourself Think to host a training session for us: "Making Reason the Loudest Voice in the Room: Communication Training for a Propaganda Era." Join us to learn how to restore dialogue to our communities. Click here for more info and to RSVP.

Keep up all the good work, particularly calls to state and federal officials and letters to the editor. We are making a difference!

With gratitude,

Judy
